VEA Windshield Deflector

VEA Windshield Deflector

At Emerald Transportation Solutions, we’re always looking for practical ways to reduce overhead, lower emissions, and make refrigerated transport more efficient. Especially on long highway runs where drag and fuel burn add up fast. That’s why we outfit our trucks with VEAP Shield United technology designed to improve real-world aerodynamics. Their work is backed by aerodynamic testing and measurement efforts, including wind-tunnel research tied to fuel- and emissions-reduction goals.

What the Wind Deflector Is and Does

A windshield deflector (like the VEA system Emerald uses) is an aerodynamic device that helps guide airflow more smoothly over the front of the refrigerated body and through the tractor-to-trailer gap. That gap is a major source of drag on highway speeds, because turbulent air “spills” into the space and creates resistance. By shaping and redirecting airflow, the deflector reduces that turbulence so the vehicle cuts through the air more cleanly. In short: it’s a simple, durable add-on that targets one of the biggest aerodynamic pain points in hauling

How this Boosts your Profits

Not only do fuel savings reduce your cost-per-mile, they also reduce the time losses that come with frequent refueling. Fewer stops and a longer effective range help keep delivery schedules tighter and routes more predictable, especially on multi-stop days or long hauls. Over time, improved efficiency can translate into better asset utilization: more productive drive time, less interruption, and steadier operating costs you can plan around. It’s the kind of operational advantage that compounds across weeks and months of deliveries

The Emerald Difference

Many providers operate at “good enough,” but Emerald invests in premium, performance-focused components that align with proven aerodynamic best practices because small details create big margins in refrigerated logistics. Choosing the VEA Wind Deflector is one more example of building trucks around long-term value, not minimum compliance. It’s also consistent with a broader commitment to measurable improvements in sustainability and efficiency through better engineering and product choices. The result is a refrigerated fleet that’s designed to protect product, reduce waste, and keep your deliveries moving efficiently – mile after mile.

What does under DOT mean?

Questions regarding DOT requirements come up often. 10,000 lbs GVW (gross vehicle weight) and over are commercial vehicles that fall under the Department of Transportation regulatory requirements.

What is the difference between GVW and payload?

GVW or Gross Vehicle Weight is the entire weight of the vehicle including the payload. The payload weight represents the amount of cargo you are hauling.

What is a self-powered unit and a vehicle-powered unit?

A self-powered unit has its own fuel source and will run independent of the truck. This is the heaviest and most expensive option. While vehicle-powered units run off the engine via a compressor mounted on the engine. These are less expensive and lighter in weight but you must run the truck or plug the electric standby into shore power.

What does K-factor mean and why is that important?

K-factor is a term that stands for the overall insulating value of the container (truck body). Quite simply the lower the K-factor the better the truck body will be able to maintain a given temperature and require less energy to do so.

How much lighter is a Poly Van vs a US spec body?

Poly Van bodies are very light. On average we estimate we are 75-150 lbs per foot lighter than a traditional sheet and post foamed in place body. These weight savings translates to less fuel burn and less CO2 emissions, along with added payload, the most important benefit.
