If you know you will be transporting smaller payloads a refrigerated compact van may be right for you. When you’re ready to buy a refrigerated van, you want to know you’re getting the most bang for your buck. We’ve selected a few of the best-refrigerated vans for small businesses to consider.

Nissan NV200

The Nissan NV200 is a perfect compact van for when you’re on a budget. It’s an incredibly versatile and functional van that’s great when you need to transport smaller loads. They typically offer up to 122.7 cubic feet (about half the volume of a storage unit) of cargo space and are highly maneuverable when you need to get around tight corners and small spaces. They’ve also got excellent gas mileage, averaging around 24 mpg in the city and 26 on the highway, and a fuel-saving CVT transmission with 131 horsepower engines. When you need a high quality, budget-friendly van, the Nissan N200 is a great fit.

Ford Transit Connect

The Ford Connect is another excellent van when you are on a budget and don’t require a large, full-size panel van. The wonderful thing about the Ford Connect is that it’s highly customizable, so it’s an excellent brand to consider when you know you’ll be doing any modifications. The standard refrigerated vans come in either a 2.0 L 4-cylinder or 2.5 L 4-cylinder engine and ranges from a 1300 to 2000-pound payload. If you want a van that’s customizable and easy to drive, consider the Ford Connect.

RAM ProMaster

If you have a higher budget to work with, the ProMaster offers a lot of versatility. It has two fantastic engine options available and has a larger refrigerated cabin than most other vans. It also has a standing interior height of 76 inches and can hold up to 4,417 pounds (about twice the weight of a Clydesdale horse) of cargo capacity. If you know you’ll be carrying a more significant amount of product but still want the maneuverability of a compact van, the ProMaster is the perfect option for you.

What does under DOT mean?

Questions regarding DOT requirements come up often. 10,000 lbs GVW (gross vehicle weight) and over are commercial vehicles that fall under the Department of Transportation regulatory requirements.

What is the difference between GVW and payload?

GVW or Gross Vehicle Weight is the entire weight of the vehicle including the payload. The payload weight represents the amount of cargo you are hauling.

What is a self-powered unit and a vehicle-powered unit?

A self-powered unit has its own fuel source and will run independent of the truck. This is the heaviest and most expensive option. While vehicle-powered units run off the engine via a compressor mounted on the engine. These are less expensive and lighter in weight but you must run the truck or plug the electric standby into shore power.

What does K-factor mean and why is that important?

K-factor is a term that stands for the overall insulating value of the container (truck body). Quite simply the lower the K-factor the better the truck body will be able to maintain a given temperature and require less energy to do so.

How much lighter is a Poly Van vs a US spec body?

Poly Van bodies are very light. On average we estimate we are 75-150 lbs per foot lighter than a traditional sheet and post foamed in place body. These weight savings translates to less fuel burn and less CO2 emissions, along with added payload, the most important benefit.
